I'm trying to build the ultimate* old PC gaming rig. The computer is built - it's got a DFI LANParty nF4 mobo with a 2.4GHz Athlon X2 CPU, 4GB RAM and an NVidia GTX650Ti graphics card and Aureal Vortex 8830 sound card. It has FreeDOS 1.2, Windows 7 and Linux Mint installed on three separate hard drives, a 3.5 and 5.25" floppy, Zip, DVD, and a whole load of media card format support (SD, MemoryStick, CompactFlash…) It should be pretty sweet, but…
…it seems to play DOS games even worse than it plays Fortnite (which is really doesn't have the power to play but, surprisingly, just about can). Arkanoid in FreeDOS, which should be fine on an 8088, stutters - and it isn't the only one. Crystal Caves stutters too, as does Cannon Fodder. It's a mess. So, question 1 - has anyone else experienced this stutter, and what's the fix?
Question 2 - CGA and EGA colours are off. They aren't as bright as I remember, and they seem to be shifted towards yellow (I'm using a Benq LCD - but the colours are fine in Windows, with VGA and in text mode). Is there a fix for this? A driver or TSR, perhaps, which shifts the colours back to where they should be?
Thank you for anything that you can suggest - and Happy Advent!
*until the next one
