Games with a sound test/music menu

Post by Vyothric » Fri Jul 01, 2011 9:34 pm

PC

Command & Conquer - accessible in-game in the sound options menu
Command & Conquer: Red Alert - same thing
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun - same thing
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - same thing
Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge - same thing
Duke Nukem 3D - accessible in-game by pressing F5 to select a music file, Shift+F5 to play
Rage of Mages - accessible in-game in the sound options menu
Rage of Mages II: Necromancer - same thing
Rise of the Triad - accessible in-game, requires a cheat code
Super Street Fighter II Turbo - accessible from the main menu
Tyrian/Tyrian 2000 - the jukebox option is in the sound setup programme

[Edit] I forgot to mention Dune 2000, which has the same type of built-in music player as the rest of Westwood Studios' strategy titles. Also, I'm not 100% sure on this, but Age of Wonders also has a similar in-game music player. Yet another game is The Settlers II: Veni, Vidi, Vici, which is a bit more simple, as you just click on a button with a number to select a MIDI tune, which will play in a loop until you pick a different one. The Westwood type player shows track titles, length of each track in min:sec format, the play/stop commands, and also shuffle and repeat track options that can be toggled.

Perhaps it should also be stated explicitly that with the exception of Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which has a console game-type sound test menu with both music and sounds, other games listed above contain the means to play music, but not specific sounds.

On another note, I love the soundtrack from Herzog Zwei, which evokes some really nostalgic feelings :D I even downloaded the MIDI versions of the tunes (not auto-converted but sequenced manually) from some website dedicated to console game music :)

Major Stryker has the typical music and sound "jukebox" options accessible from the main menu screen.

Fade to Black also has a classic style music and sound test menu in the sound options (accessible from the game's main/on-pause menu).

Mother 3 on Game Boy Advance contains a sound test, you need to unlock the songs though

Soundtest is nice feature. The problem is that it is in game, and for CD games that uses direct MP3 ( PCEngine ) it can be terrible if the disc have problems. Otherwise it is one of the features that should be in every game. Their are tons to choose from, but I usually listen to

Kirby Dreamland 3, something about this game that makes listening to the music over and over a nice joy. Kirby had sound test from the first game, but it is hidden mode in the original. Even have some nice animation on the original Gameboy

Super Mario World 2, YI. Yoshi's Island, is probably the pinicale of all Mario games. Miyamoto somehow decided to take advantage of pre-rendering and use it to a more realistic advantage over Donkey Kong Country ( in fact he never did like what Rare did with the 3d of DKC, in one interview ). The same was done for Kirby 3. I just load this game up for the title music alone, the other stages are also auwsome, and has that baby theme but freindly, spooky ookie like how SMW but even more advance. This at least for me is the pinicale of what could be done with graphics. I mean other games releeased before this, have done hand drawn but none other made this thing.

Super Metroid is another one.

I don't know almost any game has a decent soundtrack.
